The Rich Young Ruler Mirror: When Obedience Isn’t the Same as Surrender

One day, I realized something that made me pause. It was not a comfortable realization, but it was necessary.
I was the rich young ruler.
It is easy to read that story in scripture and think about someone else. Someone whose struggle looks different, someone whose life does not reflect your own. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized that it was not just his story. It was a mirror. And when I looked closely, I saw myself.
When Doing Right Still Isn’t Surrender
The rich young ruler was not a bad person. He obeyed the commandments, lived a moral life, and did what was right. From the outside, everything about his life looked aligned. It reflected discipline, structure, and commitment.
If we are honest, that kind of life can look like strong faith.
But when Jesus asked him to release the one thing that had control over his heart, everything shifted. He could not let it go, and he walked away sad. Not because he did not believe, but because he was not willing to surrender.
That is where the difference becomes clear. You can be doing all the right things and still be holding on to the one thing God is asking you to release.
What Was Beneath My Control

For him, it was wealth. For me, it was control.
Control did not always show up in obvious ways. It looked responsible. It looked like planning, being prepared, and staying ahead. I found myself trying to manage every outcome, guarding my emotions, and building walls to make sure I would not be hurt again.
From the outside, it looked like I had everything together.
But underneath it all was something deeper that I had not fully faced.
Unforgiveness.
The Hidden Thread We Don’t Always See
Control had become my way of protecting myself, but it was also keeping me from fully trusting God. When you have experienced pain, it is easy to convince yourself that staying in control is the safest option.
You begin to rely on your own understanding, your own plans, and your own boundaries.
But control is not always strength.
Sometimes it is a response to something unresolved.
Unforgiveness has a quiet way of settling into the heart. It does not always make itself known right away, but it shapes how you think, how you respond, and how you interact with others. It builds walls that feel necessary, but those same walls can keep God out of the very places He is trying to heal.
When Jesus Reveals the Heart

What stands out in this story is not just what Jesus said, but what He revealed. He did not challenge the rich young ruler’s behavior. He exposed his heart.
That is what makes this encounter so powerful, and it is something we see throughout scripture. Jesus meets people where they are, but He also reveals what is holding them back from fully surrendering.
When God begins to show you those areas in your own life, it is not always comfortable. It requires honesty. It requires you to look beyond what appears right on the surface and deal with what is actually going on within.
But that exposure is not meant to shame you.
It is an invitation to freedom.
What Are You Holding On To
This is where it becomes personal.
What is the one thing that God has been asking you to release?
It may not look like wealth, but it could be control, unforgiveness, fear, or something from your past that you have not fully surrendered. We all have something, and just like the rich young ruler, we have a choice.
We can hold on to what feels safe and familiar, or we can trust God enough to let it go.
Choosing to Stay Instead of Walking Away

The rich young ruler walked away, but we do not have to.
We have the opportunity to respond differently. We can choose to stay, to trust, and to surrender, even when it is uncomfortable. Because what God asks us to release is never greater than what He desires to give us in return.
Freedom, healing, and wholeness are on the other side of surrender.
Letting go is not about losing something valuable. It is about making room for God to do a deeper work within you.
