Growing Beneath the Surface: Trusting God in Hidden Seasons

There are seasons in life when it feels like nothing is happening.

You pray faithfully, yet the answers seem delayed. You obey God, but no one notices. You work on healing, growth, and spiritual maturity, yet there is little visible evidence that anything is changing. These seasons can feel frustrating because we naturally want to see progress. We want to know that our efforts matter and that God is moving.

But what if some of God’s most important work happens where no one can see it?

Roots Grow in the Dark

When we think about growth, we often focus on what is visible. We admire tall trees, flourishing gardens, and abundant fruit. Yet before any of those things appear above the surface, something important happens below it.

Roots begin to grow.

Roots develop underground, hidden from view. They push through dark soil where no one applauds them. No one takes pictures of roots. No one celebrates their progress. Yet those unseen roots are what make future growth possible.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

Some of the deepest work God does in us happens during seasons when very little appears to be changing on the outside.

Hidden Does Not Mean Forgotten

One of the enemy’s greatest lies is convincing us that if no one sees our progress, then our progress doesn’t matter.

But God sees.

He sees every prayer whispered in private. He sees every act of obedience. He sees every time you choose faith when doubt feels easier. He sees every tear shed during seasons of healing.

Just because your growth is hidden from others does not mean it is hidden from God.

In fact, some of the most significant transformations happen away from public view.

The Purpose of Deep Roots

A tree cannot grow tall without first growing deep.

The greater the tree’s potential height, the stronger its root system must become. Without deep roots, even a healthy-looking tree can be vulnerable when storms arrive.

God understands what lies ahead for us.

Sometimes He allows us to remain in hidden seasons because He is developing the strength, character, wisdom, and faith that we will need later. What feels like delay may actually be preparation.

What feels buried may actually be planted.

The roots God is developing today may become the very thing that sustains you tomorrow.

Trusting God When Growth Feels Slow

Hidden seasons often require trust.

We trust that God is working even when we cannot see immediate results. We trust that obedience is producing something valuable. We trust that His timing is perfect, even when it differs from our own expectations.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us:

“But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Waiting is not wasted time when God is involved.

Waiting can be a season of strengthening.

Don’t Despise the Hidden Season

The world often celebrates visible success, but God frequently works through hidden development.

The quiet season may not feel exciting. It may feel lonely. It may feel like you’re being overlooked. Yet those hidden moments are often where spiritual roots are formed.

The patience you are learning, the faith you are building, and the trust you are developing are becoming part of your foundation.

One day, others may see the fruit. They may see the strength. They may see the growth.

What they won’t always see are the roots that were formed in the dark.

If you’re walking through a hidden season right now, don’t lose heart. Trust that God is still working beneath the surface. Continue praying, obeying, growing, and trusting Him even when progress feels invisible. The roots He is developing today may be preparing you for a season of growth beyond what you can currently imagine.
