What Are You Standing On? When Storms Reveal Your Foundation

The storms of life have a way of revealing what we are truly standing on. They uncover what is beneath the surface, exposing the foundation that supports us when everything around us begins to shake. It’s easy to feel strong when life is calm. It’s easy to believe our faith is solid when circumstances are going our way. But storms have a way of testing what we trust in most.

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus tells the story of two men who built houses. One built his house on the rock, and the other built his house on the sand. At first glance, both houses may have looked similar. Both provided shelter. Both stood tall. Both seemed secure. Yet when the rain came, the floods rose, and the winds beat against them, only one house remained standing.

Storms Are Part of Life

One of the most important lessons from this passage is that storms come to everyone. Following Christ does not exempt us from difficulties. We all experience seasons of loss, disappointment, uncertainty, heartbreak, and challenges we never expected.

Sometimes we assume that if we are walking closely with God, life should be easier. Yet Jesus never promised a storm-free life. Instead, He promised that He would be with us through every storm.

The difference between the two houses was not the weather they faced. The difference was the foundation beneath them.

Sand May Feel Easier

Building on sand often feels easier. Sand is convenient. It requires less effort. It allows us to build quickly without addressing what lies underneath.

Spiritually, sand can represent trusting in our own strength, relying on other people, placing our identity in accomplishments, or seeking security in things that can easily change. These foundations may appear stable for a season, but when life’s pressures increase, they often prove unable to support us.

Many of us don’t realize we’re standing on unstable ground until the storm arrives.

The Rock Requires Trust

Building on the rock requires something different. It requires surrender. It requires obedience. It requires trusting God even when His way feels more difficult than our own.

The rock is Christ.

When we build our lives on His Word, His truth, and His promises, we develop a foundation that can withstand life’s strongest winds. This doesn’t mean we won’t feel the impact of the storm. We may still experience fear, grief, disappointment, or uncertainty.

But because our foundation is secure, we are not destroyed.

Standing When the Storm Comes

There are moments when the winds of life blow so hard that we feel like we might break. Yet God never called us to depend on our own strength. He calls us to stand on His.

When your life is built on Christ, you may bend, but you will not be broken. You may cry, but you will not be abandoned. You may feel the storm, but you will not be swept away.

The strength of the house is found in the foundation.

Instead of only asking God to help you rise, ask Him to help you stand. Ask Him to reveal any areas where your foundation needs strengthening. Ask Him to deepen your trust and anchor your heart in His truth.

Storms don’t just test the house, they reveal the foundation.

And when your foundation is Christ, you can face whatever comes knowing that He is faithful to hold you steady.
